My morning was sweet and inspiring. First did a couple of Initial appointments, Then did the newborn exam on the "super fast" baby that arrived last yesterday afternoon. I fell so in love with this baby... maybe it was that first little impression that his mother would reject him (she didn't, she was loving and cuddling him last night and absolutely hovering by morning), or maybe that in some way he so reminded me of my first dear son, as he was the same size and had a little face that reminded me of Ian. I hated to send him away, but was so pleased at the mama's obvious love for this little wee man. Then a morning of prenatals with some interesting cases. One young mama who claimed to be 10 weeks who was obviously more like 5 months, and another mama with High BP who was in her late 30's who had hardly eaten for two days because a relative told her that to prevent getting eclampsia (again) she should not eat much for the rest of her pregnancy. It was just wonderful to get to talk to these moms and watch the midwives in action with them as well. I sometimes feel I am learning by osmosis as much as anything else. Rub off on me Shiphrah Midwives... I will take all the Filipino wisdom I can get.
Still suffering from some sinus pain and congestion and so took a nap after all my Postpartums showed up. Thankfully dear Ate (this is a title of respect and pronounced AH Tay, meaning big sister) Helen made me a little bowl of Filipino magic which I am sure has antibiotic properties as good as any bowl of chicken soup. It is loaded with a lentil type bean, some bits of fish, garlic and nice big chunks of ginger. Also it was loaded with Moringa leaves (also called Moringay or something like that... which is called the tree of life), also had okra and a few other veggies thrown in. The broth was amazing and not fishy at all, just savory which is comforting when your nose is stuffy.
Still working on figuring out all the changes in paperwork, but feel better since talking to my husband. His words were similar to my Jordann's. Both said, you came to the Philippines to catch babies... so catch babies and learn. That gives me peace and lets me take joy in the work with faith that the help will come in good time for the paperwork to be done. Night Y'all!
Here
are my two food contributions for the day. The first is the wonderful
tiny bananas that are sold here in abundance. They are perfectly ripened
and never sold green. The other is mangosteen. I have seen it listed in
vitamins before, but never eaten one.
It is so yummy and tastes like a combination between a sweet orange and a
kiwi fruit. I am loving the fruit here. The sweet little kids of the
other intern call the mangos the "juicy juicy" mangos! I concur! So
"Juicy Juicy"!
Fingerprints All Over My Heart!
Today was rather quiet, with one possible premature labor which we sent to the hospital. I also had 3 initial appointments and 4 prenatals. It has been a couple of nights since we had a birth so I figure things are going to get exciting around here pretty soon. I had another solo adventure today. I rode on a trike, which as you can see in my other post is a kind of public transport. It cost me about $1 to ride to the mall from the main road, and about $1.50 for one to pick me up right outside the mall and drive me to my doorstep. Lovely! I got to do my shopping which included stopping at the computer store, stopping at the hardware store, and doing some grocery shopping. My one rather guilty pleasure was taking one go round the S.M. Department store... what pure fun. I can just hear Madame Blueberry singing Stuffmart from Veggietales. The little girls shoes are divine and I must figure out the corresponding sizes so I can bring all my girlies a pair. Oh so sweet. The kitchen section was too much fun, but was able to resist the electric teapots! Haha! Anyone that goes to the Philippines would enjoy the sheer array of goodies, and the small sizes of things. I certainly am. There are also some awesome things like this two level dishdrainer thinggy that acts like a cabinet when done. SOOOOOO cool! And no flies and such can land on your dishes when drying because it closes. They also have the best ever little mats to wipe your feet on when going in the door and other little charming items that are so common here. Anyway, it was a quick trip and there is so much more I would like to see, but going alone is hard and also trying to do the peso to dollar thing in my head is pretty overwhelming too, so it is hard to just go enjoy looking. Love to all.
