Fingerprints All Over My Heart
Day 18
What a wonderful day. Had one little baby swoosh into the world in a hurry this morning, then went to church with my friends Rachel and Dan, then back to Shiphrah for the birthday/christening celebration of Myzelle aka Mai Mai as she turned one. I will post pics of this tomorrow with some of my observations about the party. Great fun and just from knowing these people these last few weeks I could have almost predicted that they know how to enjoy grand fellowships with one another. They do! After the party I got to take a real honest to goodness nap, and then it was back to work this evening as a mama came in to have a baby again after waiting 11 years since the last. I could so relate to this mom as she was around the same age I was when I had my last baby and her oldest was around the same age as my eldest. This baby is going to be well loved with 4 big sisters and a big brother waiting at home for her! Lovely birth, the baby took her time (but not long at all by American standards) and slipped out simply and easily, and hardly cried, but looked at mom with peaceful wise eyes and snuggled down against her belly. It was very beautiful and I had to fight back tears of joy. Mother and baby are sweetly resting in the bed together now and my heart feels so happy. Just finished talking with my honey, and am heading off to bed with happy thoughts of him getting the children up and ready for church. Night all.... ♥ ♥ ♥

Here is mystery.... the more of my heart I give away, the bigger it grows!

Love this... I have decided that I definitely just need to be me! I mean there is no one else here who can do the job! Kind of nice though.... I love the fact that I can stop feeling guilty for all my little idiosyncrasies and just go with it........

Day 18: Party Food
Two Beautiful Cakes for Princess Myzelle!
On my plate: Chop Suey~special chop suey with hard boiled quail eggs!; Sioma~Little dumplings{in the foil boat}; Lumpiang Shanghai~little fried spring rolls; Menudo~Filipino version has pork, liver, hot dogs, carrots, potatos, green peas, and is cooked in a tomato sauce base seasoned with garlic and onions; Hamonado~chicken dish made with pineapple and cheddar cheese; Puto (Spanish speakers relax... LOL it's the little cake looking thing)~little flour pastry that was wonderful... kind of like a custard only with a fine cake texture; Spaghetti (surprise!)~um.... spaghetti... haha! Just like mama used to make!; And of course.... wait for it.... wait for it.... RICE! Yep there was an entire igloo ice chest full of rice for the party. I only had about two teaspoons on my plate, and someone asked me why I didn't have rice and I tried to explain that with the pastry, the spaghetti noodles and the little fried dumplings etc. that I felt that would be way too much. It is a mystery to the people here why I eat so little rice every day. No matter what the dish is... noodles, spaghetti, meat, chop suey they still serve it over a large pile of rice. My tummy can't handle it, makes me way too full.
Here is the beautiful Ate (pronounced Ah Tay) Helen, the mama of the birthday girl organizing the huge spread. Notice the decoration on the left lower edge of the picture... the little shish ka bob looking things. They are a typical bright edible party decoration that is made of colorful marshmallows on skewers that are alternated with..... cut up hot dogs! These are then arranged into a small portion of a trunk of a banana tree that has been cut in half. Very original and creative! The next picture shows one of my lovely table mates enjoying this unique combination. Haha... I guess the hot dogs help off set the sugar rush of the marshmallows! Too much fun! Wonderful, wonderful party!

Day 18: Mai Mai's Most wonderful birthday!
Here you see various birthday celebrations and so much pure joy on everyone's faces! The little bamboo frames with the prizes tied on is called Pabitin and is one little traditional game for the children. The other is reminiscent of the Spanish Piñata but is in a little clay pot (in this instance painted princess pink, but normally orange) filled with coins, candy and prizes, this is called Palayok and like a Piñata the children are blindfolded and each get one swing to try to break it. As good fortune would have it Michelle, the big sister of Myzelle (Aka Mai Mai) hit the target and the children swooped in to claim their prizes. In other various pictures we see my friend Rachel and her darling red headed boy, The adorable Mai Mai enjoying her birthday food, my three beautiful seatmates (classmates to the big sister Michelle), The ladies (and Mai Mai's mother Helen) serving the food, my new friend Sherrie Mae with her knockout smile next to Helen, the birthday "family", Midwife Lornie laughing joyfully, Midwife Dina holding her baby and standing by Behl's girl, Midwife Behl, Sherrie Mae, Midwife Lydia, and Midwife Grace together, Midwife Lornie protecting the children for the "stick swinger", Helen with daughter Michelle, and Michelle at party's end handing out party bags. Fantastic celebratory Natal day Helen! As a mother of 7 who has conducted untold numbers of birthday parties I salute you! This woman, mother of three (one of them a breastfeeding one year old!) is the house manager here and keeps all the various parts of the bahay paanakan (birthing home) running seamlessly... on top of that she feeds me two meals a day 6 days a week! I love her! Yea girl power!!!!
